NEDERLAND, Colo. (AP) - Nederland's mayor has resigned amid what she called a politically hostile and divisive environment.

Sumaya Abu-Haidar says in her resignation letter that since her election in April 2010 she has accomplished some of her goals, like finishing a water treatment plant and hiring new staff. But she says the tone of public communication with the town board of trustees and she in particular "has become increasingly divisive, unproductive and even hostile."

The Boulder Daily Camera reports that Abu-Haidar announced her resignation at Tuesday's board meeting. Her term was set to expire next spring.

Trustee Joe Gierlach is expected to be sworn in as mayor Sept. 20.
