A Papillion, Nebraska man died Wednesday night after being strangled by his own snake.
The boa was 34-year old Corey Byrne's pet. Byrne had no pulse when rescue crews arrived at his downtown apartment. He died at Midlands Hospital.
Investigators say the man's girlfriend, who was there in the apartment while Byrne held the snake on his shoulders, made the 911 call. The snake was still squeezing the man's neck when rescue crews started CPR.
The Nebraska Humane Society took custody of the snake and is holding it pending the investigation by Papillion Police. It was initially thought to be a python but upon later inspection the NHS said it is a Red Tail Boa Constrictor. The snake is about 8 to 9 feet long and weighs 25 pounds.
It is legal to own a boa as a pet in Nebraska.
