NCHC update - Jan. 21

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Bauer National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Players of the Week for the week of Jan. 13-19 are Western Michigan senior forward Shane Berschbach for Offensive Player of the Week, WMU sophomore defenseman Kenney Morrison for Defenseman of the Week, Nebraska Omaha freshman forward Austin Ortega for Rookie of the Week and Denver senior netminder Sam Brittain for Goaltender of the Week.

 

 

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Shane Berschbach, Western Michigan

Senior Forward

Clawson, Mich.

 

Berschbach totaled three points in WMU's series at No. 4/3 St. Cloud State, notching a goal in each game while adding an assist in the series opener. On Friday, he recorded two points, helping the Broncos erase a three-goal deficit and earn a tie and shootout win. He scored WMU's third goal to pull the Broncos within one at 4-3 while assisting on the game-tying goal to complete the comeback as he was +2 in the contest. The next night, Berschbach scored the game-winning goal in the third period to break a 1-1 tie as WMU earned five of six points in the series. The assistant captain finished with a +3 rating on the weekend and was named the game's first star on Saturday. Berschbach has now claimed NCHC Offensive Player of the Week three times this season.

 

 

DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK

Kenney Morrison, Western Michigan

Sophomore Defenseman

Lloydminster, Alta.

 

Morrison had a career weekend in helping the Broncos capture five of six points at No. 4/3 St. Cloud State, as he dished out four assists, had a +1 rating and blocked two shots in the series. In Friday's 5-5 tie and shootout win, he tallied a career-high three assists, including one primary, with a helper on each of WMU's first three goals to spark a comeback after trailing 4-1. Two of the assists came on the power play while he was +1 with a blocked shot in the game. The next night, he handed out the primary assist on the game-winning goal in the third period to lift the Broncos to a 2-1 win. On Saturday he also anchored a penalty kill unit that killed all six SCSU power plays, including a two-minute two-man advantage, while blocking another shot.

 

 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Austin Ortega, Nebraska Omaha

Freshman Forward

Escondido, Calif.

 

Ortega led the Mavericks to a tie and win at Miami over the weekend with a three-point series and a +1 rating. He scored a goal in each game, both coming on the power play, while adding an assist in Friday's tie. In Friday's 2-2 draw, he had a hand in both goals to help UNO erase a 2-0 deficit as he had the primary assist on the Mavs' first goal to get within one while he scored the game-tying goal in the third period. Ortega posted a +1 rating Friday, as well. On Saturday, the rookie scored again on the man advantage in the third period to help UNO complete a 5-1 win and snap a seven-game winless streak.

 

 

GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK

Sam Brittain, Denver

Senior Goaltender

Calgary, Alta.

 

Brittain continued his strong senior season, backstopping Denver to a win and a tie at Minnesota Duluth by posting a .940 save percentage and 1.85 goals-against average in a pair of overtime contests. On Friday, he allowed just two goals while making 23 saves in over 64 minutes of action, including killing all three UMD power plays, as the Pioneers won in overtime. He earned second star of the game honors on Friday. On Saturday, the Florida Panthers prospect stopped 40 shots in 65 minutes, his third game with at least 40 saves this year, while again giving up just two goals as the teams tied 2-2. Brittain also stopped two shots in the shootout following OT Saturday, while he was key early in the game, stopping 11 UMD shots in the first 11 minutes before DU managed to get its first shot on net. He totaled 63 saves on the weekend and helped kill all four Bulldog power plays. Brittain has now won or shared NCHC Goaltender of the Week honors five times this season.

 

 

OTHER NOMINEES:

 

Offensive Player of the Week

Josh Archibald, Jr., F, UNO - Recorded his second career hat trick, including two power play goals, Saturday at Miami to lead the Mavs to a 5-1 win, while he scored in Friday's shootout as well

 

Alexander Krushelnyski, Sr., F, CC - Totaled four points in the series with No. 7/7 Providence, recording a goal and an assist in both games, including a short-handed tally in Friday's 2-2 tie, while logging a +3 rating on the weekend

 

Quentin Shore, So., F, Denver - Scored two goals in DU's series at UMD, tallying the game-winner in overtime Friday while recording the game-tying goal in the closing minutes of Saturday's tie

 

Rookie of the Week

Alex Iafallo, Fr., F, UMD - Scored both of UMD's goals in Saturday's tie against Denver while also tallying in the shootout to earn the Bulldogs an extra point as he was named the game's first star

 

Goaltender of the Week

Aaron Crandall, Sr., G, UMD - Recorded a 2.31 GAA and .921 save percentage in an overtime loss and a tie against No. 16 Denver, making 58 saves, including 34 in Saturday's tie, in nearly 130 minutes of action

 

Zane Gothberg, So., G, UND - Posted a 1.44 GAA and .906 save percentage against Bemidji State, stopping 14 shots in a 1-1 overtime tie Friday, while making 15 saves in a 4-2 victory Saturday to extend his unbeaten streak to nine games (8-0-1)

 

Lukas Hafner, So., G, WMU - In a little over 110 minutes of action, recorded a .941 save percentage and a 1.63 GAA at No. 4/3 St. Cloud State, as he made 16 saves in relief in Friday's 5-5 tie, giving up just two power play goals and no goals in the shootout, while compiling 32 saves in Saturday's 2-1 win, which he started

 

Ryan Massa, Jr., G, UNO - Compiled a 1.45 GAA and a .923 save percentage in a tie and win at Miami, stopping 25 shots Saturday when he gave up just one goal in a 5-1 victory, while he stopped four of seven shootout attempts in Friday's 2-2 tie
