A nationwide effort to discourage drunken driving is being launched for the holiday season.

Highway safety agencies will be stepping up law enforcement on the roadways, while federal and state governments conduct an advertising campaign to remind the public of the danger of drinking and driving.

Some states will employ new ways of getting the word out, such as Twitter. Colorado is debuting a new iPhone application to help citizens estimate their Blood Alcohol Content level. Washington state plans online gaming ads on XBox 360 Live.

The campaign runs from Dec. 16 to Jan. 3. It's a joint effort by the Governors Highway Safety Association, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Office of National Drug Control Policy and law enforcement.
