DENVER (AP) - Some big names are participating in a Denver forum about the national debt.
But Colorado's two senators won't join the discussion this afternoon at the University of Colorado in Denver. Democratic Sens. Mark Udall and Michael Bennet invited former Wyoming Sen. Alan Simpson, a Republican. Simpson was co-chairman of President Barack Obama's debt commission, which late last year proposed a combination of spending cuts and higher taxes to cut about $4 trillion from the federal budget over a decade. Former Colorado Sen. Gary Hart is also on the panel.
Organizers say the debt discussion is going on despite a looming federal shutdown because of budget disagreements in Washington. Bennet and Udall planned to attend the meeting online because budget negotiations require them to stay in Washington.
The meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Denver campus of the University of Colorado.
