National Alliance on Mental Illness: NY Gun Control Law is Step Back

New York has passed the nation's toughest gun control law.
It includes provisions to try to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill who make threats. And mental health professionals would be required to report patients who they believe could cause harm to themselves or others.
Those with the National Alliance on Mental Illness in Colorado Springs said they've worked hard for years to get past the stigma on mental illness.
And if the guarantee of confidentiality is taken away, less people may seek treatment.

"It's definitely a step back in time in terms of the perception of mental illness. I think the thing that's important to remember is that people can and do lead successful lives with mental illness. Those with mental illness are not inherently violent," said Lori Jarvis-Steinwert, Executive Director N.A.M.I.

Steinwert said Colorado is 48th in the country for mental health support, so she'd rather see more resources put into treatment.
