Mountain highways opening up for the season

Two of Colorado's mountain highways should be open in time for the Memorial Day weekend.

The Colorado Department of Transportation plans to open Independence Pass between Leadville and Aspen Today. The highway is set to open for the season today at 2 p.m. despite this spring's late
snow storms.

The 12,095-foot pass is closed each winter because of harsh weather.

On Friday, state highway crews will open the Mount Evans Highway. Colorado 5 runs from Echo Lake to the top of  14,264-foot-high Mountain Evans. The highway will stay open through Labor Day weekend.
