MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia woman spared jail time for her vehicular homicide conviction in the death of her 4-year-old son, who was struck by a van as the two jaywalked on a busy street, says she's considering the judge's offer of a new trial.
The woman, 30-year-old Raquel Nelson, was convicted by a jury earlier this month and could have gotten three years behind bars.
More than 125,000 people joined in an online petition campaign asking for mercy.
Judge Kathryn Tanksley gave the suburban Atlanta mother a year's probation Tuesday, ordered 40 hours of community service and offered her a new trial.
Speaking Wednesday on NBC's "Today" show, Nelson said she was weighing her options and added, "There's a part of me that doesn't want to go through this again."
