BUENA VISTA, Colo. - A mortar round found in the bed of a pickup truck in downtown Buena Vista has shut down the area and caused schools to go on "lock out" status, according to Chaffee County Sheriff W. Peter Palmer.. The mortar round, found with a cell phone taped to it and wires "sticking out," is in the bed of a pickup parked between the police station and the library.
After the device was found, authorities sent out a "code red" emergency phone notification to numbers in the area.
All Buena Vista schools have been placed on "lock out" status.
The area around the device has been evacuated 100 yards in each direction.
The Buena Vista Police Department, Chaffee County Sheriff's Office, Chaffee County Fire Department, and Chaffee County Emergency Medical Service are on scene.
A bomb squad from El Paso County has been called to assist.
