New research draws a direct line between obesity and stroke -- and doctors say the heavier a person is, the higher the risk.

Higher blood pressure and prevalence of diabetes among obese adults are likely the main causes of that obesity-stroke association.

University of Minnesota researchers followed about 13,000 people for nearly 20 years. The most severely obese people were about twice as likely to suffer a stroke during the study period than those with the lowest body mass index -- no matter their gender or race.

The study led by researchers at the University of Minnesota and published in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association

Funding for the study came from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
