Macyo January, 17, was advised of his murder charges at a detention hearing in juvenile court on Friday in connection with the shooting deaths of a Colorado Springs couple.
Fort Carson soldier David Dunlap, 37, and his pregnant wife Whitney Butler, 35, were found shot to death in their home on the 200-block of Bassett Drive on Monday. According to police a witness called them just before noon on Monday after hearing shots inside the home and then seeing a man trying to steal a car.
An arrest affidavit states that investigators conducted a search warrant for a home in the nearby Timbers Apartment complex and on Thursday interviewed a woman who said she had given Macyo January a car ride shortly after the shooting. The woman told detectives that she had taken January to the home of Jerel Couch, 19, at the Vistas at the Citadel apartment complex near the intersection of Academy Boulevard and Bijou Street.
Officers said they conducted surveillance at the Vistas and on Thursday spotted January at Couch's apartment. Later that evening the SWAT team moved in and arrested both Macyo January and Jerel Couch. January is facing first degree murder charges, Couch will be charged as an accessory for allegedly helping January hide from the police.
According to court records Couch and January have a past history of criminal acts. In December 2010 January was charged with theft for stealing money and a television from a home on the 1200-block of Forest Road. Witnesses at the time told police that Jerel Couch was also involved in the theft.
Macyo January will be formally charged next Wednesday, prosecutors said on Friday that they intended to charge him as an adult. Jerel Couch is due in court on Jan. 28.
