The Chief of Police in Monument, Jacob Shirk, has joined the race to replace Terry Maketa as Sheriff of El Paso County.

Shirk, a Republican, has been the chief of Monument P.D. since 2005. Prior to that he served for 29 years with the Aurora Police Department.

Shirk joins Todd Evans at the only two Republican candidates in the race. No confirmed candidates have been announced yet from the Democratic Party.

Shirk's campaign website chiefjake4sheriff.com lists a slew of endorsements, mostly from the law enforcement community in Monument and Northern El Paso County.

It also says that Shirk is an active member of the National Rifle Association and strong support of the right to bear arms listed in the Second Amendment.

The Shirk campaign will host a meet and greet this Friday from 6:30pm - 8:30pm at the Woodmoor Improvement Association Community Center, 1691 Woodmoor Drive, in Monument.
