An airman from Canon City, missing since 1966, will be buried with full military honors at the US Air Force Academy this Friday. Col. Leo S. Boston was a member of the 14th Air Commando Wing assigned to the Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base in Thailand when he went Missing In Action in North Vietnam.
Then Cpt. Boston was the pilot of an A-1E Skyraider on a search and rescue mission when he was first reported missing. His status officially remained as MIA until April 1978 when he was presumed dead. During that time he was promoted to Colonel.
Boston was flying the lead plane in a flight of two A-1's taking part in the search when he broke visual and radio contact. The last known location of the plane was about 5 miles west of the Black River in the Son La Province of North Vietnam.
Between 1996 and 2005 a team of US and Vietnamese researchers interviewed villagers in Son La Province and recovered aircraft wreckage and human remains. Boston was positively identified by forensic scientists on April 4, 2011.
