Miller moths blamed for car wreck

An 18-year-old girl is uninjured after her car crashed into a tree off Lexington Drive, ruptured a gas line, and burst into flames. She told officials a miller moth trapped in her car was the distraction that caused the crash. Witnesses pulled the teen's body from her SUV just moments before it exploded.

Officials from the Colorado Springs Police Department tell News 5 this isn't a typical explanation they hear when investigating automobile accidents; usually, drugs, alcohol, or texting are to blame. CSPD Spokesperson Larry Herbert says this is a signal drivers need to use extra caution during miller season: "We know they're here so we need to be prepared and not over react or become overly distracted in case we do encounter something like that," he says.
