GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - Mesa County Commission have adopted a resolution supporting the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights in a federal lawsuit challenging the amendment's constitutionality.

A bipartisan group of current and former state legislators filed the lawsuit last month, alleging constitutional amendment violates a U.S. Constitution guarantee that every state have a republican form of government in which elected representatives govern.

The amendment was approved by voters in 1992. It limits state revenue and requires local governments to win voter approval for tax increases.

According to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, commissioners said Monday that the lawsuit threatens the right of citizens to make policy changes at the ballot box.
