COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - The United States' former top commander in Afghanistan is praising the courage of all involved in the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan.

Retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal spoke Monday at a convention in Colorado Springs. The Gazette reported that McChrystal said the operation required courage from both those on the ground and the "decision makers" behind it.

President Barack Obama dismissed McChrystal last year after a Rolling Stone report quoted scathing remarks McChrystal and his aides made about their civilian bosses. A Pentagon inquiry later cleared McChrystal of wrongdoing.

McChrystal says he had no direct knowledge about bin Laden's killing. But he says the mission would have required months of planning involving everyone from intelligence analysts to cooks.
