DENVER (AP) - Colorado State University professor emeritus John Matsushima will be honored as the Citizen of the West at the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver in January.

Each year the stock show uses the award to recognize someone who embodies the spirit of the Western pioneer and who is committed to perpetuating the West's agricultural heritage and ideals.

The Denver Post reports the 91-year-old Matsushima established roots in farming and livestock on family farms in Lafayette and Platteville as the son of Japanese immigrants. National Western President Pat Grant says Matsushima's groundbreaking cattle feeding research has translated to better beef taste and tenderness for consumers.
