Deep cuts may be looming for the nation's public school students as budget crises are forcing teacher pink-slips, shuttered classrooms and school program cuts.

New York public schools are $500 million short. Illinois will cut 12,600 education jobs and in California 23-thousand teacher layoff notices have already been sent out.

Randi Weingarten of the American Federation of Teachers says it's "devastating" and there's a risk of losing a generation of students. Parents have also begun raising the alarm.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan says most districts have already cut the fat and the flesh and are through to the bone. Duncan is pushing Congress for $23 billion in emergency funds, but the bill has run into stiff opposition on Capitol Hill.
