Margaret Thatcher Dies at 87

Britain's former Prime Minister and "Iron Lady" has died of a stroke at the age of 87. Margaret Thatcher was the Uk's first and only female prime minister and served from 1979 to 1990 as the leader of Britain's Conservative Party.

Her former spokesman confirmed Monday morning that she died of a stroke.

Thatcher's forceful personality and hard-driving style earned her the nickname of the "Iron Lady." She is known for remaking Britain's economic landscape after coming into office in 1979 with a free-market philosophy and the gaol of privatizing state industries.

Her lasting political influence remained, even after she grew frail from a series of small strokes in her later years.

Buckingham Palace said Queen Elizabeth II was sad to hear the news of the death of Thatcher. And Prime Minister David Cameron also expressed sadness, saying "we have lost a great leader, a great prime minister and a great Briton."

Cameron cut short a trip to Spain and France upon hearing the news of her death.

The British government said a ceremonial funeral with military honors will be held at St. Paul's Cathedral. A time for the service has not been set yet.
