The fan favorite torch has been passed from one of the best Rockies ever to one of the best Broncos ever.
Sunday, the Rockies will retire Todd Helton's number 17 jersey after what has to be the most successful tenure of any player in Rockies history. Peyton Manning, Helton's longtime friend going back to their college days together at Tennessee, won't be able to make it, but he said he'll be there in spirit.
"It's a tremendous honor, I think for any athlete," said Manning on the final day of training camp. "I think it means a great deal to a player that played his entire career here, that was all in for the state of Colorado and the city of Denver during his entire career. He's the ultimate Colorado Rockie, his number 17 retired, it's obviously a no-brainer, but Todd was truly part of them for his entire career."
Manning invited Helton to Broncos training camp yesterday. The Broncos will be in San Francisco Sunday for their 2nd preseason game tomorrow, a 2pm kickoff against the 49ers.
