An avalanche in the San Juan Mountains in southwest Colorado has killed a back country skier from Manitou Springs and injured another.
Ouray County sheriff's investigator Joel Burk says two men in a group of seven people using the back country hut system were caught in the avalanche Thursday near Ridgway.
Authorities say 27-year-old Kellen Robert Sams of Manitou Springs, tried to ride out the slide but struck a tree and died at the scene of multiple traumatic injuries. Sams was a civilian employee at Fort Carson where he was Associate Director of Adventure Programs. Burk says 24-year-old Dominic Franz Muth of Breckenridge was hospitalized with a dislocated hip in a Montrose hospital.
