A man suspected of sexually assaulting a 71-year-old Colorado Springs woman turned himself in late Thursday night.
According to court documents Jacob Lashun Lewis, 33, allegedly broke into the woman's house on Boulder Street on Feb. 7 and sexually assaulted her. The woman told police she had been lying in her bed watching TV when Lewis knocked on her window and pointed to her front door, she grabbed a pistol and ran to the door as Lewis broke through it and knocked the gun out of her hand.
After the assault Lewis stole the woman's driver's license, her gun, her wallet, a blue comforter and $100 then left. Police found footprints in the snow leading away from the house.
During the investigation a person who had done yard work for the victim in 2012 told detectives she had hired Lewis to help her, the victim identified Lewis as her attacker.
Investigators also found surveillance footage from a Walmart near the scene showing Lewis in the store around the time of the assault with another man who came forward when he saw the footage on the news. That man told police he and Lewis had been out to buy marijuana on Feb. 7 when Lewis suddenly parked his car on Boulder Street and disappeared for about half-an-hour, which matches the timeline of the break-in and sexual assault.
Lewis is already a sex offender, he pleaded guilty to sexual assault on a child in 2000.
Lewis turned himself in at the El Paso County Jail just before midnight on Thursday, he's scheduled to be in court on Monday.
