AURORA, Colo. (AP) - Aurora Police shot an armed partygoer at a hotel where fights broke out among a New Year's crowd of some 750 people.

The unidentified man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. KMGH-TV reports that two off-duty police officers were working New Year's Eve security at the Red Lion Hotel and called for backup early Sunday after the crowd became unruly and fights started breaking out.

Police found blood in the lobby and were looking for the victim and the suspect. While breaking up other fights, officers heard gunshots and ran up the stairs, where they encountered the armed man at about 2:30 a.m. Officers reportedly fired and hit him.

The officers were not immediately identified. Police say several people at the hotel were arrested, but details weren't available.
