Man shot and killed by armed security guards at Colorado Springs bar

A 21-year-old man was killed after being shot by armed security guards at the Copperhead Road Saloon on North Academy Boulevard early Friday morning.

Colorado Springs police were called to the bar just before 2 a.m. and found the man seriously wounded in the parking lot, he later died at an area hospital. Investigators said the man was armed and had fired shots at two security guards.

According to the owner of Copperhead Road both guards are active duty soldiers from Fort Carson who also work for a private security company. In Colorado Springs it is legal for bars to have armed security guards as long as the bar and the guards are properly licensed. The owner explained that the man who was killed had been kicked out of the bar earlier in the night, at closing time the guards spotted the man in the passenger seat of a car driven by a woman in the parking lot. The guards claim the man threatened to open fire on a crowd of several hundred people who were leaving the bar; police did not confirm the threat but did say the man shot at the guards who returned fire.

Police haven't made any arrests as a result of the shooting and the district attorney's office is leading the investigation to determine if the shooting was justified or if any charges will be filed.

The Colorado Springs Liquor and Beer Licensing Board said they will be reviewing the case as well to determine if any action should be taken against Copperhead Road Saloon. The bar could lose its liquor license if the board if they find it is a problem area. In the past year Colorado Springs Police have been called to the bar 215 times, including 14 assaults and 37 disturbances.

The identity of the man who was killed is not being released until his family is notified.
