A New York State man has been fined more than $12,000 after being accused of illegally shooting a
trophy bull elk near Glenwood Springs. Division of Wildlife officials say 35-year-old Thomas W. Post of Massena, New York, killed the bull elk on a private ranch on Sept. 27.
Post was fined $2,090 for hunting without a proper license and unlawful possession of wildlife, both misdemeanors. He was also fined $10,000 under the state's so-called Samson Law, which increases penalties because of the trophy nature of the animal.
An administrative hearing will determine whether Post loses his hunting privileges. A message left Saturday at a number listed for Post was not immediately returned.
Rifle hunting season begins next Saturday.
