Man escapes Denver airport before being deported

DENVER (AP) - A man who was being deported to Gambia has escaped from two U.S. immigration agents at Denver International Airport.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say 25-year-old Phoday Dumbuya was walking with two ICE agents Tuesday morning when he ran off. ICE spokesman Carl Rusnok says officers have discretion in deciding whether a deportee should be handcuffed. Dumbuya wasn't cuffed.

Rusnok didn't know what triggered Dumbuya's deportation. Dumbuya had been convicted of assault in Denver in 2008 and was sentenced to two years of probation.
