FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - A man authorities say started a northern Colorado wildfire that destroyed 13 homes has turned himself in.

The Larimer County Sheriff's Office say 36-year-old Thomas Howie, of Fort Collins, surrendered Thursday, a day after an arrest warrant was issued. He was booked and then released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond. Authorities say Howie told them the fire started when he was burning a slash pile on April 1. They say an attorney representing Howie contacted investigators five days after the fire started. The Fort Collins Coloradoan reported that according to county records, Howie didn't have a required burn permit.

The fire west of Fort Collins grew to about 5 square miles and was fully contained April 11.
