Man accused of dog torture to plead guilty

A man accused of dragging a stolen dog to its death in Colorado National Monument says he intends to
plead guilty.

An attorney for Steven Romero told a judge Thursday that Romero will plead guilty to aggravated animal cruelty. Prosecutors have not said whether they have reached a plea agreement.

Both sides will speak with U.S. District Judge Philip Brimmer next week to schedule a hearing. Romero faces up to three years in prison.

Romero's sister, Melissa Lockhart, faces a felony charge for lying to investigators. She is free on bail.

Prosecutors say Romero dragged the dog to its death and that his sister stole the pup and told him to "get rid" of it.

Buddy, a German shepherd mix, was found dead Dec. 30 at the monument.
