Major initiative to make local teen drivers safer

Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for Americans aged one - 44. The problem is especially acute for new drivers, 15-19 years old.

In an effort to save young lives in El Paso, Teller and Elbert counties, students from 32 high schools will participate in a peer to peer safety education campaign that focuses on safe driving behavior.

DRIVE SMART COLORADO created the High School Traffic Safety Challenge.

Colorado Springs Police Chief Richard Myers and Colorado Attorney General John Suthers will announce more details of the program Tuesday.
