Loveland man charged in police officer shooting

LOVELAND, Colo. (AP) - A 23-year-old Loveland man has been charged with attempted murder of a peace officer and other charges stemming from the shooting of a police officer earlier this month.

Cody Powell remains in the Larimer County Jail on $500,000 bond.

Prosecutors accuse Powell of shooting Loveland police Officer Garret Osilka (oh-SIL'-kuh) on March 4 during a traffic stop. Powell was arrested two days later after turning himself in to Fort Collins police.

Osilka was hospitalized for several days but has since been released and is recovering from his injuries.

Besides attempted murder of a peace officer, Powell is charged with motor-vehicle theft, assault, using a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a dangerous weapon and possession of a weapon by a previous offender.

Powell's next court appearance is Thursday.
