LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) - A Longmont man has been convicted in the death of his girlfriend who was beaten so badly that investigators initially believed she had been in an automobile accident.

The Daily Camera reports (http://bit.ly/WfA6bp ) that a jury Friday convicted George Ruibal of second-degree murder following seven hours of deliberations. Ruibal faces 16 to 48 years in prison at sentencing scheduled for Jan. 10.

Prosecutors say Ruibal beat Dana Pechin in December 2007 and then took care of her until she died of her injuries. Police didn't arrest Ruibal until he was indicted by a Boulder County grand jury in April 2011.

Ruibal had reported that he and a co-worker found Pechin dead under a blanket.

Authorities later determined that Pechin died from a closed head injury associated with manual strangulation.
