The city of Pueblo has a long history of state boys swimming champs but until this past weekend a Pueblo girl had never won a state high school swimming title.

14-year-old Mary Saiz from Pueblo South changed all that on Saturday in Loveland when she won the individual title in the 100 meter backstroke at the Colorado High School State Swim Meet. With a time of 58.83 seconds Mary beat her nearest competitor by about a half a second.

Mary told News First 5, "It feels pretty cool. It's just so overwhelming that I'm the first girl to ever do that. It's just so cool."

Since she's only a freshman Mary likely has more state titles in her future. She also told us she hopes to make the Olympic Trials in two years.
