Local school districts land huge grants

Two Colorado Springs area school districts have been awarded huge grants by the US Department of Education, aimed at improving the teaching of American History.

Colorado Springs School District 11 and Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8 will each receive almost $1 million. The grants were announced Tuesday.

According to the Education Dept., "The Teaching American History grant program aims to enhance teachers' understanding of American history through intensive professional development, including study trips to historic sites and mentoring with professional historians and other experts. Projects are required to partner with organizations that have broad knowledge of American history, such as libraries, museums, nonprofit historical or humanities organizations, and higher education institutions."

History is a core subject under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

D-8: $995,116
