Local diner gets national attention

For many breakfast lovers in Colorado Springs, the purple castle on Costilla St. is the ultimate greasy spoon. The King's Chef Diner has kept customers in its seats for over 50 years. Now, its getting some national attention.

It was featured April 24th on the Food Network show "Outrageous Eats" for a dish known as "The Thing." This five pound concoction has all the fixings. It's a gigantic item with texas toast, ham, bacon, sausage, hash browns, eggs, colorado green chile, and eggs.

It's so huge, that even the owner has problems finishing it. "I still can't get one down," Greg Geiser confesses. "I'm doing my best, and I'm growing everyday."

Since the show first aired, business has been good. Geiser says the number of customers coming in asking for "The Thing" is up 40 to 50 percent. Anne Mitchell and her family drove all the way from Boulder to try out the food.

"We had to find a place that seemed fun and fast," she says. "it just had to have a really great atmosphere. This is it!"

Geiser says it took over 40 hours to get all the footage they needed for the show. Some local olympians and pro cyclists were included in the segment. A re-run of the show airs on the Food Network on May 2nd at 2 pm.
