It's not unusual to see young boys or girls on the driving range at the golf course. But how often do you run into a three-year old hitting a bucket of balls?
If you frequent Elmwood golf course in Pueblo you likely have seen three-year-old Gavin Amella. He's there almost every day. News First 5 Sports Director Lee Douglas met him several weeks ago and left very impressed. This "Little Athlete" consistently hit 80 to 100 yard drives and very often sunk long putts.
Since he's left-handed Lee nicknamed Gavin "Little Lefty." And we understand Gavin is a big fan of Phil "Lefty" Mickelson on the PGA tour. Still he told Lee his favorite golfers are "my dad and my grandpa!"
No wonder "Little Lefty" took to golf at such a young age. His dad, grandfather and his mom are all very good golfers.
Gavin's mother Stephanie Amella said, "We'd watch the Masters and the U.S. Open and he'd sit on the carpet and he had the remote control and he would sit there and pretend that it was a club."
But now he hits the real thing. You might say he natural talent. But his parents say he works really hard, practices night and day and listens well.
He's not old enough to enter tournaments yet but if his interest in golf continues he'll most likely get involved with junior golf programs as he gets older.
