Federal stimulus money is being spent in Colorado Springs to encourage students and their parents to read together. Harrison School District 2 has teamed up with the Pikes Peak Library District to create the Discover Your Library program. Students are encouraged to spend time getting to know their local libraries and will be rewarded for reading.

Stacy Aldridge, coordinator for curriculum and Title 1 for District 2, says reading at home paves the way for success in school.

"It breaks down some of those walls that they may experience in school," Aldridge explains. "If they feel success in a positive way, it can transfer into the classroom."

The Discover Your Library program will take place specifically at Sand Creek, Ruth Holley and Cheyenne Mountain branches. Sand Creek Branch Manager Sid Stanfill says he's thrilled to have such an active outreach coming from the nearby schools.

"They had the money, they had good ideas, and then they let those ideas mesh with our workflow and our ability to support their program which made it even better," Stanfill said.

A kick off party for the Discover Your Library program will take place from 2-4pm, November 7 at the Sand Creek Branch, 1821 S. Academy Blvd.
