Lewis-Palmer D-38 to make big cuts

Parents and students may be facing some major changes in the coming year as Lewis-Palmer School District 38 struggles to cut it's budget. The school board has to cut about $3 million dollars from the coming year's budget. It looks as if one of the first things to go to the chopping block is Grace-Best Elementary.

According to the D-38 school board, the elementary school has at least $3 million dollars in improvements that need to be made. Without the money for those improvements the school will most likely be closed and students will be relocated to Creek Side Middle School with 6th graders also moving to the elementary schools. 7th and 8th graders would all go to Lewis-Palmer Middle School.

In addition, there are several other items on the table to be cut with outsourcing becoming a possibility for a variety of services. "It's large items that are being considered, items which normally you might not do but one every three years." explains Cheryl Wangaman with the school district, "With the state budget woes we're looking at numerous changes in a short period of time." The board could make a lot of those crucial decisions Thursday night at the board meeting which begins at 6 pm in the gymnasium of Grace-Best Elementary.
