Lesson in school work and life

For most children, kindergarten is the beginning of a lifetime of learning and at Edith Wolford Elementary in Black Forest, teacher Kelly Morgan knows how to get her young ones started off right.

"For me it starts even before they walk in the door," Morgan said.

She takes the time to get to know each child individually and carefully customizes lesson plans to fit each one.

She says that she is, "hitting their interest and most importantly where they are in the learning process."

Keeping the interest of 5 and 6 year olds means varying activities.  Days are broken up between lessons and playtime in Morgan's class.

She gives the children the freedom to choose which activity the want to take part in, so long as all of their work is completed at the end of the day.

Along with learning to read, write and add, her approach also allows students to also learn life skills of time management and decision making.

"There's a whole part to the child," Morgan said, "Academics are a huge and very important part of teaching, but the social and emotional piece and the life skills are equally important."

It's a teaching style that endears her to her students.

"She's a nice teacher and I like her," said Tyler Anderson.

Knowing that her students are learning is what Morgan says motivates her.

"If I leave my students with nothing else, I hope to leave them with a life-long love of learning."
