Legislature may not lower fees for auto registration

DENVER (AP) - Colorado Republicans have long complained about higher car registration fees and late tag registration fines. But the final GOP attempt to roll back some of those fees faces a gloomy future in a Democratic Senate committee known for rejecting GOP ideas.

The bill up for consideration Wednesday rolls back late tag registration fines from a maximum of $100 to a maximum of $10, with county clerks able to waive the fines altogether. The Republican House has already voted for the lower fines, which were passed in 2009 under a solidly Democratic Legislature.

The money goes to road and bridge projects and mass transit. Democrats have so far rejected efforts to roll back those fines, noting that Colorado already faces deep budget cuts and has roads and bridges in need of repair.
