A group of activists and advocates has filed a lawsuit challenging new Colorado laws that toughened requirements for people gathering signatures for ballot measures.

The lawsuit was filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Denver against Colorado Secretary of State Bernie Buescher.

The new laws were aimed at preventing fraud, but the lawsuit argues they go too far and violate First Amendment rights to free speech.

House Speaker Terrance Carroll, a Denver Democrat who was the main sponsor of the laws, called the suit "frivolous and without merit."
