With just about two weeks to go in the legislative session, lawmakers are still trying to figure out how to handle the growth in medical marijuana dispensaries.

A proposal to license dispensaries and require shops to grow most of the marijuana is set to get its first hearing in the Senate Tuesday.

Sponsor Sen. Chris Romer says he wants to get the "thugs and the knuckleheads" out of the dispensary business. He thinks about 80 percent of dispensaries would be forced to close under the rules.

Meanwhile, a group of Republican lawmakers wants to ask voters to just ban dispensaries altogether.

Lawmakers are close to passing another bill that would allow only doctors with full medical licenses and certifications to recommend medical marijuana.
