Lawmakers trying to regulate Colorado's growing medical marijuana industry say the recent raid of a marijuana growing operation highlights the need for clarification on what operations are legal and which are not.
Under the Obama administration's new policy, the Drug Enforcement Administration isn't supposed to target anyone who is in clear compliance with state laws allowing the use of medical marijuana. But Rep. Tom Massey and Sen. Chris Romer say it's not so easy to tell who is following Colorado's law.
The law limits how much marijuana caregivers can grow but also says they can argue it was medically necessary for them to grow more.
The law also doesn't address dispensaries and who can sell medical marijuana to patients who don't grow their own.
