USAFA, Colo. - Jacques Lamoureux scored two goals and had two assists to lead Air Force to a 5-3 win over American International (AIC) in an Atlantic Hockey Association game, Friday night at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena.
Air Force improved to 7-5-3 overall and 7-1-3 in the AHA. The Falcons extended their unbeaten streak to eight games (5-0-3) and moved into a tie for first place in the league. AIC fell to 2-11-1 overall and 2-9-1 in the conference.
Air Force opened the scoring with 1:14 remaining in the first period. Jacques Lamoureux stole the puck from an AIC player from behind the Yellow Jacket net and fed Paul Weisgarber out front. Weisgarber scored his fourth of the season. With 13 seconds left in the period, Derrick Burnett was called for slashing and AIC was on the power play. On the ensuing faceoff, Luciano Primiani took a shot from the left point that was redirected by Richard Leitner to tie the game at 1-1 with four seconds left in the period.
The Falcons took a 2-1 lead early in the second period on the power play. Kyle DeLaurell drew a hooking penalty on Dean Yakura. With just two seconds left on the man-advantage, John Kruse took a pass from DeLaurell and scored on a tough angle shot low on the goal line. Matt Fairchild also assisted on the play. The Yellow Jackets tied the game with 39 seconds left in the period when Steve McLeod scored on a breakaway. Air Force turned the puck over at the AIC blue line and Mike Little sent the puck up ice to McLeod who skated down the right side. His shot from the faceoff dot beat Andrew Volkening to the far post.
Led by Lamoureux, the Falcons dominated the first half of the third period, scoring three goals and taking a 5-2 lead. Just 84 seconds in the third period, Lamoureux skated down the right wing and made a centering pass to Burnett in front who scored his third of the season. The goal gave Air Force a 3-2 lead. Eighty seconds later, the Falcons took a 4-2 lead on Lamoureux's first of the game. Stephen Carew fed Lamoureux in the neutral zone and the junior from Grand Forks, N.D., skated down the right side. After beating a defenseman, he cut to the net, went across the crease and beat Dan Ramirez at 2:44. After the goal, Ramirez was pulled and replaced by freshman Ben Meisner. At the 7:50 mark, Brett Nylander kept the puck in the zone and sent a shot wide of the net. Weisgarber made a pass from behind the net to Lamoureux right in front for his ninth of the season, giving Air Force a 5-2 lead.
Late in the third period, AIC controlled the puck for the final five minutes as Air Force was unable to clear the zone. The Yellow Jackets pulled their goaltender with 1:29 remaining and nearly scored with just under a minute left. Tom Mele took a shot from the slot and Andrew Volkening made a glove save through traffic with 42 seconds left to maintain the two-goal lead.
