MTV officials in Los Angeles now say Lady Gaga's eight-win sweep at Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards was not a VMA record.
Peter Gabriel previously won 10 for "Sledgehammer" in 1987.
The outrageous singer picked up the biggest prize of the night, video of the year.
Another larger-than-life diva from another generation presented Gaga with her trophy - Cher. Gaga's eight wins ties with A-ha's "Take on Me" in 1986 for the 2nd highest number of wins in one night.
