Lack of snow delays openings, limits terrain at ski areas

The 2012-13 snow season is getting off to a slow start due to lack of snow. Only six areas have opened this year, and those six have only limited runs open.

Monarch Mountain was scheduled to open next week for the Thanksgiving weekend, but now their opening is on hold. Monarch relies solely on natural snow.

"Unfortunately the weather is not cooperating and we will not be able to open as scheduled," said a statement on the resort's webpage. " Please keep checking back with us, as we will announce the opening day as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding," was added.

The resorts that have opened, A-Basin, Eldora, Loveland, Copper Mountain, Breckenridge, and Winter Park all have snowmaking machines keeping what runs they do have open covered in snow.
Colorado ski resorts saw a nearly 12-percent drop in skier visits last year blamed mostly on bad snow conditions.
