La Veta woman celebrates 101st birthday

We want to wish a big happy birthday to a La Veta woman.

Jean Leri turned 101 Sunday.

If you ask her about the secret to a long life, she'll look at you with a smile.

"Well, I don't know," laughed Jean. "I don't know what's keeping me going every day, but I enjoy my outdoors. I was outdoors most of my life."

Jean was born in 1911.

Her mother was Italian, and her father died when she was only three.

In 1949, she moved from Pueblo to La Veta.

"My husband he liked the mountains, so we moved here," said Jean. "He built the house, and he built the barn."

Jean remembers when radios and T.V.'s became popular, and she's watched technology change.

She has many fond memories from her past, including cooking for senior citizens in the 1980's and seeing a cookbook of her recipes put together by friends.

"I'm the only one left now," said Jean. "My sister passed away four years ago. She's the last one, but I have a lot of my husband's nieces and nephews."

Jean stopped driving a year ago, but her license just officially expired.

As for a long life, she did leave us with some tips.

"Keep busy, and eat good homemade food," said Jean.

Jean loves gardening, and her friends say she has a green thumb.

They add she's the most remarkable women they've ever met.
