Former Republican Senator Mike Kopp is kicking off his gubernatorial bid Tuesday to challenge Democratic Governor John Hickenlooper next year. His announcement is expected in Colorado Springs at 3:30 pm during a news conference at Mesa Overlook above Garden of the Gods Park. He will then make his way to Pueblo later in the day.
Kopp is a former Senate Republican Leader and has plans to announce his campaign first at Red Rocks Amphitheater Tuesday morning at 8:30am. The Jefferson County Republican is the fourth Republican to enter the race against Hickenlooper, who is seeking re-election.
Kopp served in the state Senate from 2007 to 2011. He resigned his office after his wife died following a long battle with cancer. Kopp now works for Intermountain Rural Electric Association.
Kopp joins Secretary of State Scott Gessler, state Senator Greg Brophy and former U.S. Representative Tom Tancredo in the Republican race to take on Hickenlooper. Kopp also planned announcements Tuesday in Fort Collins, Colorado Springs and Pueblo.
