GREELEY, Colo. (AP) - Families of 20 children who were killed when a train hit a school bus outside Greeley in 1961 are gathering for an informal remembrance on the 50th anniversary of the tragedy.

The bus pulled in front of a passenger train on Dec. 14 of that year. Sixteen other children were injured.

The Greeley Tribune reported Sunday that no public service is planned but the families plan a reunion.

A memorial was dedicated at the crash site in 2007after the now-closed Rocky Mountain News published a series on the tragedy. Witnesses said the bus windows were covered with frost or condensation and the angle of the tracks made it difficult for drivers to see trains.

The bus driver was acquitted of manslaughter after witnesses testified he had stopped before crossing.
