Opening a business is always scary. In this economy, the idea can be down right terrifying. One local couple refuses to let some tough times get in in the way of a great opportunity. Mary and Randy Stark are celebrating the grand Kaleidoscoops this weekend, their second ice cream store.
"I had never scooped a cone before this business," says Randy.
Now he is a certified pro.
Randy first brought up the idea of "doing something new" almost two years ago. He says Mary agreed, as long as it was nothing like the business he was already in. So, he turned to Craigslist for ideas.
"He was looking at an empty school building in the middle of Kansas," says Mary. " I said, what would we do there? He said I don't know but it's a good price."
It took almost a year, but eventually they found an ice cream store for sale in Canon City. They opened their first Kaleidoscoops in September of 2009. The Starks say it was a match made in heaven. This weekend, Randy and Mary are celebrating the opening of their second store, this one on 8th St. in Colorado Springs.
"People smile when they come get ice cream," says Randy.
Although they didn't purchase store #2 on Craigslist, they did use it to purchase equipment. All of the equipment in the new store is used. About 90 percent of it is from Craigslist.
"It saved us a lot of money, and it helps us get in here quickly," says Mary. "It helps us succeed."
"I just love Craigslist!" says Randy.
