Kalamazoo Central High School has won a contest to have President Barack Obama as its commencement speaker this spring.

The western Michigan school was one of three finalists in the Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge. Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced the winner Tuesday.

The Denver School of Science and Technology in Denver was one of the schools competing. Also competing, was Clark Montessori Junior High and High School in Cincinnati.

The three were winnowed from six through public voting on videos and essays submitted by the schools.

Central High is part of Kalamazoo Public Schools, which under the Kalamazoo Promise program provides scholarships covering 65 percent to 100 percent of a student's college tuition for four years.
